The Billion Seconds Institute

Expand your (inter)thinking.

The Billion Seconds Institute is a lifelong learning initiative to organise a network of specialists, advisors and communities of practice to reimagine the ways we understand and shape the mental, social and environmental impacts of the digital economy.

Our aim is to help you expand and activate holistic ways of thinking for today, tomorrow and the next billion seconds.

OUR PROPOSAL

What if we unite to reimagine the internet(s) as sustainable networks of knowledge, solidarity and care?

OUR PURPOSE

Encourage a paradigm shift from users to intercitizens

Our aim is to contribute to a transition from the individualism of a user-centric digital economy to the interdependence of digital ecosystems driven by responsible citizens of Planet Earth.

In other words, collectively learn how to become intercitizens.

Read more about the thinking behind this purpose in The Everything Manifesto

Cultivating holistic ways of thinking for your professional and personal life.

Through an eclectic set of programmes, we want to help you to cultivate holistic mindsets, long-term (and large-scale) approaches and creative strategies for systemic change, always while encouraging solidarity and collective critical hope.

The courses will help you to rethink the ways citizens and organisations can understand and shape the mental, social and environmental impacts of the digital economy by:

  • Demystifying the myths around AI, NFTs and other socio-technical bubbles

  • Using futures as tools for collective decision-making and practicing long-term thinking

  • Designing strategies for climate-neutral, solidary and sustainable digital tools, products and services

We are developing these original curricula in collaboration with an eclectic faculty and learning partners using the 10 hypothetical questions of The Everything Manifesto as a post-technological research framework.

The CaféThe social area for members to post and discuss job opportunities, open calls or ask for professional advice or feedback on projects.
Open and Private RoomsFor organising discussions, research groups, hyper-reading clubs and other social knowledge activities.

OUR STORY

A Journey of Hypothetical Questions

Our vision for The Billion Seconds Institute started with the publication of The Everything Manifesto, a collection of proposals and thought-experiments to change how we interrelate with Planet Earth.

First public presentation of the manifesto at PRIMER EU Conference in Madrid. October 2019
Everything Manifesto salon at 10th Floor Studio in San Francisco. December 2019

We presented and discussed it in multiple cities and events, hosted workshops and ran courses inviting different groups of people to ask:

What if we imagine a billion in terms of time, life, attention, instead of understanding it only in terms of money?

This shift had an expansive effect on our collective imaginations.

It empowers us to think long-term and large-scale, opening doors to the mindsets and approaches we need to address a crisis with the scale and complexity of the environmental emergency with critical hope.
